Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a structured treatment for mental distress and mental disorders. In protected conversations, symptoms, conflicts, relationship patterns, coping strategies and personal goals are explored in order to relieve distress and strengthen psychological stability.

Important in acute mental health crises

Acute suicidal thoughts, risk of harm to yourself or others, severe agitation, confusion, loss of reality or states of intoxication can be emergencies. Please call emergency services immediately or go to the nearest emergency department.

When psychotherapy may be useful

Psychotherapy may be helpful when psychological strain persists, symptoms become stronger or everyday life, work, relationships or physical well-being are affected. Whether psychotherapy is appropriate is clarified individually during the first appointments.

  • Depressive symptoms, loss of interest or persistent exhaustion
  • Anxiety, panic attacks, avoidance behavior or inner tension
  • Stress-related symptoms after life changes, loss, conflict or trauma
  • Repeated relationship conflicts or difficulties with boundaries and self-esteem
  • Psychosomatic complaints influenced by emotional strain
  • Obsessive thoughts, compulsive behavior or repetitive worries
  • Difficulties dealing with chronic illness, pain or neurological symptoms
  • Personal crises, decision conflicts or the wish to better understand recurring patterns

Diagnostics

How psychotherapy begins

The first appointments serve to understand the current complaints, personal background and treatment goals. They also clarify whether psychotherapy in this setting is suitable or whether another form of support is more appropriate.

Initial consultation

The initial consultation focuses on current symptoms, life situation, previous treatment, expectations and the question that should be clarified in therapy.

Probatory sessions

Probatory sessions help assess the indication, therapeutic focus, cooperation and whether a trusting working relationship can develop.

Treatment goals

Therapy goals are defined together and may include symptom relief, better emotional regulation, stronger self-esteem or clearer handling of conflicts.

Medical context

Physical illnesses, medication, sleep, neurological symptoms and psychiatric treatment are considered where relevant.

Therapeutic focus

The work is individually oriented and may include psychodynamic understanding of current conflicts, stabilization, psychoeducation and practical strategies for everyday life. The exact approach depends on the symptoms, the treatment goal and the therapeutic indication.

Understanding symptoms and patterns

Recurring thoughts, feelings, behavior patterns and relationship experiences can be explored in order to better understand what maintains distress.

Stabilization and coping strategies

Therapy can support the development of strategies for dealing with tension, anxiety, depressive thoughts, stress and difficult interpersonal situations.

Psychosomatic connections

When physical complaints and psychological strain influence each other, psychotherapy can help identify connections and develop a healthier way of dealing with symptoms.

Coordination with psychiatric treatment

If medication or psychiatric follow-up is useful, psychotherapy can be coordinated with medical treatment so that both approaches support each other.
