Neurology

Neurology deals with disorders of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. The focus is on careful medical history, clinical neurological examination and targeted diagnostics in order to classify symptoms and plan appropriate treatment steps.

Important in acute cases

Sudden paralysis, speech or vision disturbances, severe sudden headache, new confusion or loss of consciousness can be signs of an emergency. Please call the emergency services immediately instead of waiting for a practice appointment.

When neurological assessment may be useful

A neurological consultation can help when symptoms suggest a disorder of the nervous system or muscles. The exact assessment always depends on your individual medical history and examination findings.

  • Headaches, migraine or facial pain
  • Dizziness, balance problems or gait instability
  • Numbness, tingling, burning pain or sensory disturbances
  • Muscle weakness, paralysis or coordination problems
  • Tremor, involuntary movements or other movement disorders
  • Seizures or episodes of impaired consciousness
  • Memory, concentration or orientation problems
  • Speech, swallowing, visual or hearing disturbances with possible neurological cause

Diagnostics

Neurological diagnostics in the practice

Depending on the symptoms and medical question, different diagnostic methods may be used or arranged. The goal is a medically reasonable clarification without unnecessary duplicate examinations.

Medical history and neurological examination

The consultation, the description of symptoms and the physical neurological examination are the basis of every diagnostic assessment.

EEG

Electroencephalography records the electrical activity of the brain via surface electrodes and may be useful, for example, when clarifying seizures or episodes of impaired consciousness.

Nerve conduction studies and EMG

Electrophysiological examinations can help assess the function of peripheral nerves and muscles, for example in suspected polyneuropathy, nerve compression or muscle disease.

Doppler and duplex sonography

Ultrasound examinations of blood vessels supplying the brain can provide information about blood flow, narrowing or vascular wall changes when medically indicated.

Common neurological topics

The practice supports patients with a wide range of neurological complaints. The following topics are typical examples and do not replace an individual medical assessment.

Headache disorders

This includes migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache and secondary headaches that may require clarification of another underlying cause.

Dizziness and balance disorders

Dizziness can have many causes. Neurological assessment helps distinguish central and peripheral causes and determine the next diagnostic steps.

Epileptic seizures and episodes of impaired consciousness

Clarification may include a detailed description of the event, neurological examination, EEG diagnostics and coordination of further steps.

Movement disorders

Symptoms such as tremor, slowed movement, stiffness or involuntary movements can be assessed neurologically and treated according to the diagnosis.

Peripheral nerve and muscle disorders

Polyneuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve root irritation and muscle weakness are examples of conditions that may require neurological and electrophysiological diagnostics.

Memory and cognitive disorders

Memory problems, concentration difficulties or orientation problems should be clarified carefully, especially when they affect everyday life or progress over time.
