Psychiatry focuses on mental illnesses and disorders that can affect mood, thinking, perception, behavior, sleep, drive and social participation. As a medical specialty, it considers biological, psychological and social factors and combines diagnostics, counseling, medication treatment, psychotherapeutic elements and coordinated follow-up.
Important in acute mental health crises
Acute suicidal thoughts, risk of harm to yourself or others, severe agitation, confusion, loss of reality or states of intoxication can be emergencies. Please call emergency services immediately or go to the nearest emergency department.
When psychiatric assessment may be useful
A psychiatric consultation can help when emotional, cognitive or behavioral symptoms are persistent, distressing or limit everyday life, work, relationships or sleep.
Persistent sadness, lack of drive or loss of interest
Anxiety, panic attacks or avoidance behavior
Sleep problems, inner restlessness or exhaustion with psychological strain
Strong mood swings, manic phases or depressive episodes
Trauma-related symptoms after severe stress
Obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviors
Hallucinations, delusional thoughts or marked loss of reality
Addiction problems or harmful use of alcohol, medication or other substances
Diagnostics
Psychiatric diagnostics in the practice
Psychiatric diagnostics are based on a careful conversation, structured assessment of symptoms and, where necessary, additional examinations to consider physical or neurological influences.
Psychiatric consultation
The detailed conversation includes current symptoms, life situation, previous illnesses, medication, sleep, stress factors and personal resources.
Psychopathological assessment
Mood, drive, thinking, perception, memory, concentration and behavior are assessed in a structured way during the consultation.
Physical and neurological orientation
When necessary, physical or neurological causes and medication effects are considered and further examinations are arranged.
Questionnaires and tests
Standardized questionnaires or psychological tests may support the assessment, for example in depression, anxiety, ADHD or cognitive complaints.
Common psychiatric topics
The practice supports adults with different mental health complaints. The following examples give orientation and do not replace an individual medical diagnosis.
Depression, exhaustion and bipolar symptoms
Depressive symptoms can include persistent low mood, loss of interest, sleep problems, exhaustion and reduced concentration. Strong phases of elevated mood, increased drive or reduced need for sleep may point toward bipolar symptoms.
Anxiety, panic and obsessive-compulsive symptoms
Anxiety and compulsions can significantly restrict everyday life. A specialist assessment helps clarify triggers, maintaining factors and suitable treatment steps.
Stress-related and trauma-related disorders
After severe stress, accidents, loss or threatening experiences, symptoms such as tension, intrusive memories, avoidance, irritability or sleep problems may occur.
Psychotic symptoms and severe mental crises
Changes in perception, delusional ideas, marked withdrawal or disorganized thinking should be clarified early and treated with a structured plan.
ADHD and concentration problems
Attention, organization and impulse-control problems can persist into adulthood and may overlap with sleep problems, depression, anxiety or substance use.
Addiction and psychosomatic complaints
Problematic alcohol, medication or substance use as well as physical complaints influenced by psychological strain can be assessed and treated as part of an overall plan.
